I agree. If WHMCS automatically cancels invoices for expired domains, it seems logical to do the same when a domain is transferred away. Once the service is no longer managed by the provider, any future renewal invoices become unnecessary and can create confusion for both staff and clients. If WHMCS will allow to set invoice to cancelled automatically or delete an invoice, at least this needs to be an option under settings.

Crazy that this is not already covered!! You have us charging clients for services we no longer provide, with no alert to admin about what is happening. Completely blind-sided by this! Makes us appear dishonest... :-/

The correct way for all those companies is to issue a credit note invoice as suggested here:
