Similar to Namecheap and GoDaddy and Support Pin the user can find in the Client Area would make Support Calls a lot easier to verify the owner of the account.

I currently have a module that generates a pin when the client visits the page. On the admin side, you can decide which admins can see all pins, and which can only search pins (for example, the client gives the pin and the agent can only search that pin in the database returning the client profile.) The client can regenerate the pin upon clicking "Regenerate Pin" and the old pin expires immediately. The old pin also automatically shows an expired status after the amount of time I set (1 hour) and will still show the client profile linked to the pin, but it will show its expired and ask for them to regenerate the pin. I have had no issues with this method and it works perfectly.

isn't this really just replicating the the security question/answer which serves the same purpose. Customer calls in, you ask them for the answer to their security question in the same way you would ask them for the pin.

where I could see a pin being more useful is in a situation where phone support is not provided by default, unless you have a support contract, in which case you get a PIN, and you need to enter the pin on an IVR menu in order to get through.
