We do not believe that loading assets from a remote source is the correct way for the product to behave by default, but as you rightly say, it's very easy to edit the templates to do so. The template file you would need to edit for this (includes/head.tpl) does not change all that often so you shouldn't find maintaining it through upgrades troublesome.
