Use Path-style requests rather than vhosts or have the option to choose.

What what be the benefit of such a change? Would it enable you to do something which is currently not possible?

Correct, many self-hosted S3-Compatible options are not compatible with the current system (E.g. MinIO) and even a few Object Storage providers such as Cloudflare R2.
