We just had a case where editing in HTML caused some rogue HTML to make it into the plain text code of an e-mail template that broke the Smarty Template code and some "not so good" invoice e-mails went out to clients in a batch run. I think it is necessary that upon saving an e-mail template (or also with a button click before) the system would check for any Smarty errors and display any error messages so we can fix templates before they are being used by the system.
