The domain checker has received a number of changes in the past 2 years that I believe addresses what you were asking for here. Firstly the implementation of support for alternative domain lookup providers, and in particular eNom, allows for searches to be completed much more quickly for a range of extensions. In addition, the process is now ajax driven in the latest Six theme which allows us to provide a loading icon while searches are being performed making it much clearer to end users.
