In some cases it is hard to track which payment correspondents with what invoice, specially when you use pro forma invoicing. I would lik to be able to print the corresponding pro forma invoice on paid invoice so my customer can see what invoices are linked to what payments.

Example:
proforma id is 4000 after paying the invoice number is 251 on the invoice there should be a notice what the proforma invoice was.

A proforma invoice ID on a paid invoice refers to a reference or document number associated with the proforma invoice, https://geometry-lite.org which is a preliminary bill of sale sent to the buyer in advance of the delivery of goods or services.

We are in the same boat, trying to figure out how to deal with this, as customers request a relation between proforma and final invoice.

Maybe a hook could solve it and be written in the template so when is changed to final invoice the info is still there.
