When a domain is renewed automatically the price used for the domain comes from the set rate for that particular domain.
When a domain is renewed manually by a client, the price used for the domain comes from the live rate for the TLD.
This is all fine if the price hasn't changed over time for that TLD. But when it has, you get super inconsistent behaviour. For example, if the TLD pricing has gone up (it usually does), a client that chooses to manually a bit early will have to pay the more expensive rate, even though in their Client Area it shows the lesser rate as the renewal amount.
